Mrs. Ardell (Shalhobe) Bolos, 97, formerly of the Brook Apartments, Utica, entered into eternal life on her birthday, Saturday May 29, 2010 at the Magnolia House of the Sitrin Health Care Center, with her very loving family at her bedside. She was born May 29, 1913, in New York Mills, the daughter of the late Abraham and Ellya (Jimial) Shalhobe. She was educated in New York Mills Schools, attended the Utica School of Beauty Culture, where she obtained her hairdressers license and also graduated from the Utica School of Commerce in 1930. On July 15, 1934, she married Toufek (Tofie) Bolos. Mr. and Mrs. Bolos owned and operated Bolos Grocery Store on Columbia Street, along with Bolos Catering Service. Ardell and her husband, also operated the kitchen at the Elk''s Club as well as the kitchen at the Knights of Columbus, retiring in 1987. Mr. Bolos passed away on July 11, 1996. She was a parishioner of St. Louis Gonzaga Church and was a former member of the St. Joseph''s Society, St. Mary''s Guild and United Baskinta Auxiliary. She was also a former member and past secretary of the Syrlibana Club, former treasurer of the Brook Apartments Association, was a former USO volunteer, was instrumental in forming the Rosary Group at the Brook Apartments and was a former volunteer with the Utica Neighborhood Center. Ardell handled life with ease and dignity. She set a great example of how a person should live their life. She was loving, caring, helpful and was a forgiving person. Her fine qualities made her a person that you loved to be around. Her home was open to all and was often visited by her loved ones to enjoy a traditional Lebanese feast. Ardell enjoyed playing bingo and cards with family and friends. She always let her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren know how much she loved them. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Charles Showalter of Utica and Janet and George Grizzuto of Frankfort; one son and daughter-in-law, Joseph T. and Sonia Bolos of VA; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Edward Kaliff of Poughkeepsie; one brother-in-law and his wife, Anthony and Sadie Bolos of New Hartford; one sister-in-law, Susan Hagen of FL; seven grandchildren and their spouses, George and Charlene Bolos, Michael Bolos, Michelle Bolos and Christopher Powell, Denise Martin, Colleen Mahoney and Vincent Filippelli, Patrick and Jacqueline Mahoney and Melissa and Anthony Rocco; twelve great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Joan Mahoney Farney in 2005; her grandson, Patrick Bolos in 1967; and her in-laws, Mary Bolos and Anna Abounader. Her funeral will be Wednesday at 9 am from the Bentz & Amodio Funeral Service, Inc., 470 French Rd., Utica/New Hartford and 10 am from St. Louis Gonzaga Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday from 4-7 pm. The family is extremely grateful to the nurses at the Magnolia House, Sue, Sharon, Michele, Marla and Kelley; nurses aides, Terry, Donna, Chaz and Randy; kitchen staff, Beth and Chante; and special care givers, Debbie and Michele LaPaglia.
