Arte May, 39 of Chadwicks passed away peacefully during the morning hours of May 7, 2014, at his home surrounded by his family and friends. Born April 18, 1975 in Berkeley California to Lloyd May and Mary Turley May. With Artes passing he has left many heartbroken family and friends behind. He is survived by his wife Diana Dote-May; and his three beautiful children, Alexander May, Robert Dote and Sara Dote. Arte also leaves behind his father and mother in law, Lynn and Susan Dote. These two welcomed Arte into their home when he was 15 years old and have continued to love and cherish him as if he was their own. Arte also leaves behind his brother in law, Michael Dote and his wife Connie and his sister in law, Cathy Dote. Arte and Cathy were more like siblings. Throughout Arte's battle with cancer Cathy has been there to help. Arte also leaves behind nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Arte has touched many hearts throughout his life. He was fortunate to have found a unique friendship in Victor Vaccarelli, Tina Labaro, Tamara Dougherty, Darcy Cowburn and Kyle Glover. Arte loved his friends and welcomed them into his family as they also did with him. In September of 2013 Arte was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer; by the time he was diagnosed the cancer had already spread into his bones causing him to become paralyzed. Arte refused to give up without a fight, he was never one to quit so easily. Arte also had the love and support of his family and friends to keep him motivated to continue to fight. During Artes life he was always surrounded by friends and family; to know Arte was to love him. At the age of 15 Arte met Diana Dote. These two became best friends; they were true soul mates destined to share their lives together. After 24 years together, Arte and Diana were married in their home on October 13, 2013 after Artes first hospital stay related to his cancer. Throughout his life Arte always did for others. Each December he donated to the House of The Good Shepard. This past summer Arte and his wife Diana welcomed almost 40 New Comer students from The Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees to spend time at their camp for the weekend. Arte had planned on continuing to help with The American and Refugee Students for Closer Connections each year. These wishes will continue to be carried out by Artes wife and children, in honor of him. Arte was employed for many years at The Fort Schuyler Club. It is here where he formed many friendships. They all became extended family members to him. Arte cherished his job and all the members at the club. During Artes illness many of the members reached out to him and his family to let them know how much they truly cared and would do anything to help. Arte also cherished his relationship with Club Manager Jim Day and Office Manager Bill Young, as well as the rest of his co-workers. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Manzurul Sikder and his staff who never gave up on Arte and was willing to fight and research every possible option for Arte. They would also like to extend a special thank you to the entire 6th floor oncology at St. Luke's Hospital for all of their wonderful care and compassion. Services will be Tuesday at 4 pm at the Bentz Funeral Service, Inc., 470 French Road, Utica/New Hartford. Relatives and friends are invited and may call from 1-4, prior to the service.
