Obituary

Claire Conway Riley, 83, of Gorton Lake Rd., died peacefully on September 29, 2010, surrounded by her family, at her residence. Having made her home on Gorton Lake in West Edmeston since 1984, she formerly resided in Rome, NY, for fifteen years, and Oneida for twenty-two years. Claire was educated at Sacred Heart of Mary High School in Manhattan, Marymount College in Tarrytown, Our Lady of Good Counsel in White Plains, and she earned her BPS degree at SUNY Utica-Rome in 1976. She was past president of the Sconondoa Fireman Auxiliary in Oneida, past treasurer of Fort Stanwix PTG in Rome, and the Gorton Lake Association. She was an active volunteer at the Hope House Soup Kitchen in Utica, the Andre House Food Kitchen in Phoenix, and a member of the Children of the Rosary. She was a parishioner of St. Bernard's Church in Waterville, NY, and the St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Phoenix, AZ. The importance of family was one of Claire''''s main focus. She was devoted to St. Anthony, and praying Novena''''s to Our Lady. She had been an avid reader, a skilled knitter, and she and her late husband Pat were strategic pinochle partners at many family gatherings. In addition to her ten children, they had also hosted many foster children, and were advocates for many babies. She was born June 11, 1927, in Scarsdale, NY, daughter of the late William and Anna Wiener Conway. Surviving are three sons and their wives, Pat and Mary Kay Riley of Cape Cod, Bill and Judy Riley of Cape Cod, and Jim and Dianne Riley of Scottsdale, AZ; daughters and their husbands, Claire and John Matlock of Boulder, CO, Maggie "Peg" Riley and Jimbo Carpenter of Phoenix, Anna Riley of Phoenix, Kathy Riley of Gorton Lake, Mary and Bob Powell of Phoenix, Barbara Riley of Phoenix, and Ellen and Mike Smith of Oswego; a brother, William Conway of Australia; 19 grandchildren, Michelle Bardwell of CO, David and Sean Riley of AZ, Pat Riley of MA, Katie Rounds and Patrick Carpenter of AZ, Jessica Norton, Mike, Jason and Kevin Riley of MA, Matthew Powell of Germany, Claire Powell of AZ, Conner, McKenzie, Madison and Grace Riley of AZ, and Josh, Eric and Kristin Smith of NY; eight great-grandchildren, Jordan and Jacob Bardwell of CO, Jessica Riley of AZ, Riley and Keeley Rounds of AZ, Nora and Quirin in Germany, and Aberle Norton of MA; and family dog, Teddybear, at Gorton Lake. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. She was predeceased by her husband, John Patrick Riley, in 2007; sister, Marie Brondou, formerly of Utica; a grandson, Austin Riley; two infant sons; and an infant daughter. Her funeral procession will form on Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. at the Kloster-Northrop & Bentz Funeral Home, 210 E. Main St., Waterville. At 10:00 a.m., a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Bernard's Church, Waterville. Burial to follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Oneida. Friends will be received on Monday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
