David N. Portman passed away peacefully on September 17, 2025, in Utica, New York at the age of 87.

Born in Sturgis, Michigan, David lived a life marked by passion, dedication, and first and foremost with love for his family.

David met his wife, Lois while undergraduates at the University of Michigan.  Six months after meeting they began a wonderful marriage lasting 63 years.

After earning his undergraduate degree from University of Michigan and a Ph.D. from Syracuse University. David went on to serve as a college administrator at MVCC (Mohawk Valley Community College), fully invested in helping students achieve their goals.

David had the heart of an entrepreneur.  He successfully created and ran several businesses over the years, including Portman Music, Nibbles and Nuts, and the Gilded Age Press.

A passionate guitar collector, David built an impressive collection that reflected his deep appreciation for fine instruments and craftsmanship. His love for guitars went beyond mere ownership—he understood their history, artistry, and the stories each instrument could tell.

David is survived by his beloved wife, Lois; his sons, Doug and Eric; son-in-law, Vince; daughter-in-law, DeeDee; and his cherished grandchildren, Jack and Meg. His family was the center of his world, and his legacy of entrepreneurship, passion for music, and dedication will continue to inspire them.

Private services were held.  Arrangements are with the Mark C. Bentz Funeral Service, Inc., New Hartford.
