Ernest J. Martin, 90, affectionately known as "Jay," formerly of Lowville, passed away Thursday, December 22, 2016 in Clearwater, FL. He was born May 2, 1926, in Lowville, a son of the late Ernest C. and Veronica Schramp Martin. Jay was a graduate of Lowville Academy, received his Bachelor's degree from St. Bonaventure College and his Master's degree from Fordham University. For many years he taught Special Education, first at Parishville-Hopkinton Central School District and later with Lowville Academy and Central School, retiring in 1991. Prior to moving to Florida in 1995, Jay was a docent for Constable Hall in Constableville, NY. While residing in Florida he volunteered for Hospice in Largo, FL and The Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, FL. Jay enjoyed travelling to the British Isles, Europe and Northern Africa, and especially enjoyed taking cruises to exotic locales. He was also an Opera aficionado. He was predeceased by his brother, Stephen F. Martin. He is survived by his sister in-law, Patricia A. Martin of New Hartford, NY; nephew, David (Elaine) Martin of Lowville, NY; nieces, Carol (Dean) Obernesser of Rome, NY and Sue (Bob) Thomas of Oak Hill, VA; great nephews, Branden Obernesser of New Hartford, NY, Ryan Obernesser of Utica, NY, Stephen Martin of Lowville NY, Jeremy Thomas of Oak Hill, VA; great niece, Krysta (Jerome)Ortlieb of Lowville, NY; and a great-great niece, Madelyn Ortlieb of Lowville, NY. A private graveside service will be held at Lowville Rural Cemetery in the spring. Arrangements are with the Bentz Funeral Service, Inc., New Hartford, NY.
