Obituary

Francis J. (Frank) Giacovelli, 85, retired Utica fireman, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, November 30, 2011, at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare, with his loving family at his bedside. He was born and educated in Utica, the son of Paul and Rosa Angelillo. On August 6, 1949 Frank married the former Lorraine Gagnon in St. Francis DeSales Church. They shared a blessed union of 48 years. His beloved Lorraine passed away on December 12, 1997. Frank proudly served his country in the Army during World War II. He was a professional firefighter in the City of Utica for 34 years, retiring in 1988. He was also employed by the Caruso Cheese Company for many years. Frank was a 45 year member of the American Legion Post 229 and a member of the IAFF, Local 32, of the Firefighters Union. Frank touched the lives of all who knew him, and he enjoyed his Sunday visits to Cafe Caruso. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, John and Josephine Giacovelli, Deerfield; his daughter and son-in-law, Frances (Missy) and Ralph Lucia, Cassville; a sister, Mary Cocus, Seattle, Washington; a cousin, Dominick Angelillo, Utica; his in-laws, Gilbert and Barbara Gagnon, Horseheads, New York, and Joseph Oczkowski, Deerfield; six beloved grandchildren, Erin and Steve VanPelt, John and Lonna Giacovelli, Anne Giacovelli, Dr. Amie Lucia and husband, Dr. Lee Cummings, Carrie and Russell Tinker, and Sarah Lucia; four great-grandchildren, Brady and Natalia VanPelt, and John III and Arianna Giacovelli; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Paul Henry Giacovelli; a sister-in-law, Janet Oczkowski; a brother-in-law, Henry Gagnon; his cousin, Marie Angelillo; and his great-granddaughter, Gianna Rose VanPelt. Calling hours for family and friends will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2011, from 3-6 p.m. at the Bentz & Amodio Funeral Service, Inc., 470 French Rd., Utica/New Hartford. A prayer service will be held at 6 p.m., at the funeral home, officiated by Rev. Joseph Salerno. Private interment will take place at Mount Olivet Cemetery. The family would like to thank the U.F.D. Emergency Services, Dr. David Petrie and the ICU staff at St. Luke's Hospital. A special thank you is extended to Dr. Scott Brehaut and ICU Nurse Kim for their compassion and attentiveness to our father at a very difficult time.
