Harry J. Wolfe, 85, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and brother, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2021, with his wife and daughters by his side. He was born in Utica, NY on April 4, 1936, the son of Myron W. Wolfe and Tina Levitt Wolfe, and graduated from Utica Free Academy in 1954 and from the University of Buffalo in 1958. For more than six decades, Harry led Wolfe News Service, the family business that was founded by his grandfather, Samuel J. Wolfe, in 1897. He was involved with the company from an early age, delivering newspapers from his bicycle when he was a boy in the 1940s and later working in the warehouse and driving trucks throughout the Adirondack region during his high school and college years. After completing college, Harry returned to work alongside his father and assumed the leadership of the company upon his father's death in 1971. He oversaw the growth and diversification of the business into a multifaceted, innovative distributorship serving Central and Western New York, and came to be recognized as a leading figure in the industry. Harry greatly valued the contributions of the many employees, partners and customers of the company he worked with over the long period of his leadership. No contribution was more important than that of his wife Ruth, who worked alongside him for decades. In addition to serving as president of Wolfe News, Harry was an active and philanthropic participant in the local community. He served on a number of boards, including those of Utica College, Utica College Friends of the Library, the Greater Utica United Way, and the Charles T. Sitrin Home. He was also a lifelong member of Temple Beth-El, a 32nd degree Mason of Moriah Lodge, a member of the Atlantic Coast Independent Distributors Association, and a supporter of a wide range of environmental causes in the Old Forge area. Harry had many passions, including tennis, traveling, aviation, skiing and boating. But nothing was more important to him than his extended family, and his greatest pleasure was in presiding over the annual July 4th gathering at his home in Old Forge, which grew to be an eagerly anticipated multi-generational homecoming for family and friends. Harry is survived by his loving wife, Ruth (Jones) Wolfe; and by his daughters, Deborah R. Wolfe and her husband Philip Raible and their daughter, Emma Wolfe Raible of Brooklyn NY, Andrea G. Wolfe and her husband Kirk Lipsey and their children, Edith Wolfe Lipsey and Jack Wolfe Lipsey of Brooklyn, NY, and Nancy Wolfe Huckaby and her husband Eric, and their sons, Max Stone Huckaby and Beny Daniels Huckaby of Clinton, NY; and Ruth's daughter, Salli Jones Doyon and her husband David and daughter, Jordan Paige McLean of Naples, FL. He is also survived by his first wife and lifelong friend, Diane Wolfe; his sister, Sandra Nathan and her husband Edward Nathan of Las Vegas NV; Birdye Wolfe (the wife of his late brother Richard) of New Hartford, NY; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Paul and Pat Jones of Willington, CT; his Aunt Zelda Solomon; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Harry touched many lives and will be deeply missed. The family will receive visitors from 5:30 to 7 p.m. this evening, November 7, 2021, at the Mark C. Bentz Funeral Service, Inc., 13 Oxford Road, New Hartford. Cantor Kalman Socolof will officiate a brief service at 7 p.m.
