Obituary

Mr. Herbert E. Guertin, 84, of Utica, entered into eternal life on March 21, 2011 at the Lutheran Home of Central New York in Clinton, with the love and support of his family by his side. He was born November 18, 1926 in Raynham, MA, the son of Herbert and Alberta (Neal) Guertin. On July 19, 1952 he married Carmelita Napoli, with whom he shared a loving 48 year marriage, until her passing on March 29, 2001. Herbert was a US Navy veteran serving during WW II in the Pacific and in the Korean War. Herb loved to attend annual reunions with his remaining shipmates of the LST 700 and their families. Herb was an electronic engineer and worked for many years at General Electric on French Rd. in Utica, in later years at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, and at Thomson Consumer Electronics in Syracuse. Herb loved his family and was especially proud of his grandchildren. He just beamed when he spoke of them. Herb's leisure time passion was flying and in his earlier years he was a commercial flight instructor. He loved to go up to Highland Airport, where he met with all of his pilot buddies-they flew, watched others land and take off and had a grand time. His other past times were golf, fixing things (he was known as "Mr. Fix It") and playing pool at Hippo''''''''s in Yorkville, where he developed many great friendships. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia (Guertin) Hatch and Ray Hatch of Kingsport, TN and grandsons, Ryan and Matthew Vanover both of Woodbridge, VA; his son and daughter-in-law, Gary Guertin and Barbara (Baltzer) Guertin and grandchildren, Kathleen, Michael, Joseph and Meredith all of Vernon, NY. In addition he leaves his sister and brother-in-law, Roberta and Leo Gauthier of MA, a sister, Gloria Watson of OH, and a sister, Patricia Lawler of IL; and sisters-in-law, Margaret Baker of Utica, NY and Diane Guertin of OH; many special cousins, especially Josephine Cangello of Clark Mills, NY and Anthony Poccia of Utica, NY; and many cherished nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Albert Baker and Donald Guertin. Family and friends are invited to attend his memorial service on Friday, March 25, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Immanuel Baptist Church, 9501 Weston Rd., New Hartford. The family will receive visitors at the church at the conclusion of the service. There are no calling hours. Private interment will be in the family plot in Calvary Cemetery. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Alicia DeTraglia and her staff at Faxton-St. Luke''s Regional Cancer Center for their professionalism, wonderful sense of humor, and compassion as they cared for Herb. Also, a special thank you to the staff of the Applewood Unit at Lutheran Care for their kindness, care and compassion during a difficult time, especially thanking Chris, Duane, Diane, Michelle, Megan, Karen, Kim, Alex, Irene, Christina, Jeb and Jodie. The family would also like to acknowledge Pastor Vin and Charlene Upham at Immanuel Baptist Church and many other church members (notably Ken and Nancy Thomas) who provided support, companionship, and numerous acts of kindness. Lastly the family would like to thank the many friends, family members, and neighbors (notably Aaron and Rose Cidzik) who have been there for Herb over the years. Arrangemnts are under the guidance of the Bentz & Amodio Funeral Service, Inc., Utica, New Hartford.
