James P. “Jim” Barwick, born in York, Pennsylvania, on September 26, 1933, died on September 25, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was the son of John and Laura Barwick.

Jim attended Haverford College and earned a master’s degree in urban planning from the University of Pennsylvania. At Penn, he met Ruth Bushman, the love of his life. They married in 1959.

Jim and Ruth made their home in Utica, New York for most of their adult lives, where he served for several years as Commissioner of Planning for Oneida County. His later professional life was devoted to developing low-income housing for rural elderly residents in central New York State. He and Ruth eventually moved to Tucson, Arizona, where they spent many happy years.

In addition to Ruth, Jim is survived by their children, Joshua (Binh Diep), David, Dan (Carin Barwick), and Rachel (Albert Reichert); his granddaughters, Dora and Simone Eidex and Laura and Leah Barwick; and his brother, Peter. Jim’s beloved brother, Jack and sister, Betty predeceased him.

His family will remember Jim for his kindness, gentleness, and integrity. Donations in his memory may be made to Temple Emanu-El in Utica, New York.

A private graveside service will be held at Temple Emanu-El Cemetery, New Hartford. Arrangements are with the Mark C. Bentz Funeral Service, Inc., New Hartford.
