Obituary

Madeline S. Giacovelli, 85, a longtime resident of New Hartford and Waterville, passed away peacefully, after a long and courageous battle with cancer, on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at Wesley Village in Pittston, PA, with the love and support of her family. She was born February 18, 1925, in Utica, the daughter of the late Herbert and Mary Matys Knoblock. Madeline was married to Nicholas S. Tieti who passed away in 1961. She was later joined in marriage to Leonard Giacovelli who passed away in 1986. At a young age, Madeline enjoyed working part time at the candy counter at Sears-Roebuck & Co. in Utica. She concurrently enjoyed serving her country as a civilian contractor at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome in support of the WW II efforts. In continuance of her strong work ethic, Mrs. Giacovelli worked as a social worker for New York State at the Utica Psychiatric Center in Utica for 40 years, caring for the elderly and visiting the family care homes, a position she truly loved and enjoyed. While working full time, Madeline managed to obtain her Bachelor's degree in Psychology, while also caring for her family. In 1987, she retired, but continued to pursue an active and fulfilling life outside of work. Madeline was a self sufficient, determined, strong willed, spiritual and religious person, as well as a kind and loving mother. Many times she could be spotted driving her conversion vans around town, frequenting yard, garage and estate sales, in search of antiques and collectables. Madeline also enjoyed visiting her favorite local restaurants, where the servers knew her well and where she developed many lasting friendships. She was also involved with the New Hartford Senior Citizen Center and was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church in New Hartford. In 2000, Madeline was able to fulfill a lifetime dream of touring throughout Europe, accompanied by her beloved son, Jim. For the past 16 months, Madeline lived at Wesley Village in Pittston, PA, to be close to her family, who will miss her deeply. She is survived by her only son and daughter-in-law, James and Loriann Giacovelli of Pittston, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 66 Oxford Rd., New Hartford. Entombment will follow in Crown Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum, Kirkland. Calling hours are Friday evening from 4-7 at the Kloster-Northrop & Bentz Funeral Home, 210 E. Main St., Waterville. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the entire staff of Wesley Village in Pittston, PA, for all their wonderful and loving care given to Madeline and allowing her the priceless gift of living out her final days. They would also like to thank Janice Elliott of Waterville for all her devotion and dedication to Madeline, prior to her move to Pittston.
