Obituary

Margaret M. Kelley, 73, of Utica, passed away September 21, 2016, at Abraham House after her third battle with cancer. She was born April 6, 1943, in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, the daughter of the late Fred and Margaret Mary Lee Guenthner. As the daughter of an Army officer, she moved frequently in her youth. She traveled to such places as Fort Bliss, TX; Fort Richardson, AK; El Paso, TX, and Kaiserslautern, Germany. Her family settled in Huntsville, AL, where she worked as a secretary at Redstone Arsenal. It was at Redstone where she met and married her husband, George Kelley. They eventually moved to Central New York, where they lived in New Hartford and raised their two daughters, Michelle and Jennifer. At the time of her death, she was employed with Allied American Abstract Company. She was a member of Temple Emanu-El, its Sisterhood, and served on the Temple cemetery committee. Maggie was a long-time runner; she began with running long distances, and ran in the Boilermaker several times during the late 1980's and early 1990's. She then ran marathon distances, and in her later years, decided to switch gears entirely and transition to track running. She competed several times in track events at the Empire State Senior Games. She was an animal lover, and at the time of her death, had 5 dogs, all of which were rescue dogs. Maggie was also a die-hard Alabama football fan: Roll Tide Roll! She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Michelle MacEnroe of Utica, and Jennifer and Eric Stanley of Minoa; a sister and brother-in-law, Rose Marie and Charlie Petty of Decatur, AL; a brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Anna Guenthner of Taunton, MA; three grandchildren, Vanessa and Alyssa Stanley and Alexander MacEnroe, as well as several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be Friday at 11:00 am at Temple Emanu-El Cemetery, Roberts Road, New Hartford, with Rabbi Cassi Kail officiating. Following the service, all are welcome to a luncheon that will be served at Temple Emanu-El, 2710 Genesee Street, Utica. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Abraham House for their care of Margaret; to her Hospice staff, and also to Dr. Alicia DeTraglia and her office for their treatment and dedication during Margaret's illness. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider Temple Emanu-El, Abraham House, or the Stevens-Swan Humane Society in her memory. Arrangements are with the Bentz Funeral Service, Inc., New Hartford.
