Obituary

Marilyn Schindler Dunham Turi, 73, of Utica, entered into eternal life on Monday, March 1, 2010, in Gillette, WY, after a long illness. She was born in Utica, the daughter of the late George A. and Cecilia Peters Schindler. Marilyn graduated from Thomas R. Proctor High School in 1954 and received her AA Degree in English in 1972 from SUNY Morrisville. Although a resident of Utica, she also resided for a time in Hamilton, NY, and in Gillette, WY. Marilyn was married to James F. Dunham of Hamilton on July 13, 1957. Mr. Dunham passed away on July 8, 2007. She married Richard Turi on November 28, 1987. Mr. Turi passed away on October 6, 1995. Marilyn was employed in circulation and reserve at Colgate University Library and retired from Bass Pro Shops in 2006. She was a troop leader and volunteer for the Foothills Girl Scouts in both Utica and Hamilton, NY, and she was a member of the Twiglets of Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton. While residing in Hamilton, she was a parishioner of St. Mary's Catholic Church, a long time member of their choir and Altar Rosary Society, and a teacher of religious education. While a resident of Utica, she was a parishioner of St. Mary of Mount Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Church. Marilyn's greatest passion was performing and directing on stage, TV and film. She performed with the Hamilton Music Theater, Sherburne Music Theater Society, SUNY Morrisville College Theater, Player's Theater of Utica, and various theaters in Florida and Maryland. She starred in many memorable roles, including Dolly Levi in Hello Dolly and Nana the Dog in Peter Pan. Marilyn also appeared in several films, including Slapshot and the TV show Homicide: Life On The Street. In addition, she did voice over work for TV commercials in Utica. Marilyn's children emphasized the fact that their mother's whole life was dedicated to being a "Mom". Marilyn is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and James Harry, Gillette, WY; her two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael and Marianne Joerger Dunham, West Chester, OH, and David Dunham, Seattle, WA; her brother, Gordon Schindler, Utica; her sister and brother-in-law, Catherine "Kitty" and Richard Jones, New Hartford; her grandchildren, Michael Harry and fiancee, Rhiannon Miles, and Kelly Harry, all of Gillette, WY, and Andrew and Allison Dunham, both of West Chester, OH; her nieces and nephews, Steven and Linda Jones, Karen and Gregory Sipp and their two children, McKenzie and Morgan, Beth Williams and son, Tyler, and fiance, James Carter, and Gregory Jones, all of Utica. Marilyn's funeral will be held on Monday, March 8, 2010, at 9:45 a.m. from the Bentz & Amodio Funeral Service, Inc., 470 French Rd., Utica/New Hartford, and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary of Mount Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Church, where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Jim Cesta. Private interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery. Calling hours for family and friends will be on Sunday,from 3 to 6 pm at the funeral home.
