Obituary

Mathew J. (Irv) Dziekan, 96, of Oriskany Falls, passed away Monday, December 6, 2010 at the Community Memorial Hospital Extended Care Facility in Hamilton. He was born May 20, 1914, in New York Mills, the son of the late Ignacy and Antoinette Dziekan and was educated in New York Mills schools. Irv was an Ammunition Sergeant with the 434th ARMD FA BN. He served in Northern France, Central Europe, the Ardennes Forest and Rhineland during WW II, participated in the Battle of the Bulge and was the recipient of the Bronze Star. In 1967, in Pennsylvania, he married Jean E. Alberding Schroedel. For many years, Mr. Dziekan was employed with Kelsey-Hayes (Utica Corp.) in Whitesboro, retiring in 1979. After his retirement he became a self employed painter. He was a member of the Kelley-Phillips American Legion Post #569, the VFW Post #9591, a life member of the New York Mills Fire Department and was a former member of the Whitestown American Legion Post #1113. He is survived by his wife, Jean; a daughter, Linda Wilk of Virginia Beach, VA; a step-son, Rodney Burnham and family of Vergennes, VT; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Helen Boris and Katherine Podogo; and two brothers, Joseph and Walter Dziekan. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral on Thursday at 11 am at the Kloster-Northrop & Bentz Funeral Home, 210 E. Main St., Waterville with Rev. Msgr. Adolph Kantor officiating. Spring interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Oriskany Falls. A calling hour will be held Thursday from 10-11, prior to the service.
