May E. Wallins 1921-2016 May E. Wallins, 94, of Utica, formerly of Watertown, passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2016, surrounded by her family. May was born on October 12, 1921, in Brooklyn, the daughter of the late Isidore and Sadie Cohen Elkinson. She received her education in New York City schools and attended City College of New York. On December 14, 1947, in Brooklyn, May married her husband of 54 years, Irving N. "Sonny" Wallins. Mr. and Mrs. Wallins resided in Watertown for over 50 years, and for many years Mrs. Wallins was an assistant librarian for various elementary schools within the Watertown City School District. They relocated to Utica in 1998 to be closer to family. Mr. Wallins passed away August 20, 2002. May was very active in her children's lives and was a longtime member of Degel Israel Synagogue in Watertown as well as an advocate and avid supporter of the Jefferson Rehabilitation Center, also in Watertown. May is survived by three children, Sanford and Nina Wallins of Pembroke Pines, FL, Richard Wallins of New Hartford and Michele and Dr. Robert Schulman of New Hartford; two grandchildren, Scott and Amy Wallins of Atlanta, GA and David Schulman of Chicago, IL, a sister, Irene Kurtz of Boca Raton, FL; as well as nephews and a special niece, Sheryl Steinberg. May was predeceased by her sister, Gertrude Sacks; and her brother, Joseph Elkins. The funeral will be Friday at 10 am at Temple Emanu-El, 2710 Genesee Street, Utica with Rabbi Cassi Kail officiating. Graveside services will be Friday at 2 pm at Degel Israel Synagogue Cemetery, Cook Road, Watertown. Shiva will be observed on Sunday from 2-5pm at the home of Michele and Dr. Robert Schulman, 14 Eagle Ridge Drive, New Hartford.
