Obituary

Reba Myra Manchester, 89, formerly of Waterville, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2008 at the Community Memorial Hospital Extended Care Facility in Hamilton. She was born November 25, 1918, on the family farm in the Town of Columbus, the daughter of the late Harold and Evlyn Shawler Miller. She was a graduate of New Berlin High School and the Oneonta Normal School. On December 31, 1941, at the Columbus Quarters Baptist Church, she married Jay Elward Manchester, a devoted union of over 66 years. For many years, Mrs. Manchester was a teacher with the Waterville Central School District, where she taught kindergarten and third grade, retiring in 1978. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Waterville and sang in its choir. Mrs. Manchester was also a member of Crystal Chapter #188 O.E.S., the Waterville Traveler's Club, the Waterville Book Club and both the New York State and Waterville Retired Teacher's Associations. Reba loved holidays and family time. She was an avid reader and enjoyed listening to music as well as playing piano and singing. She is survived by her husband, Jay; three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Jeanne Manchester of Oneonta, Mark and Linda Manchester of Hamilton and Robert and Suzanne Manchester of Lima; her son-in-law, Robert Allen of West Winfield; twelve grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and many wonderful friends. She was predeceased by a daughter, Norine Allen; and two brothers, Malcolm and Arden Miller. The funeral will be Monday at 10 am at the First United Methodist Church, Tower St., Waterville, with Pastor Genett Timlin officiating. Interment will be in West Edmeston Cemetery. Calling hours are Sunday afternoon, from 2-5 at the Kloster-Northrop & Bentz Funeral Home, 210 E. Main St., Waterville. Members of Crystal Chapter will meet Sunday at 4:00 pm at the funeral home for ritualistic services.
