Sandra M. "Sandy" Kalies, 82, of North Utica, passed away Friday, July 8, 2016 at her home, with her loving family by her side. She was born September 9, 1933, in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of the late Donald Belgrano and the late Thomas J. and Margaret Mary Allen Belgrano Smith. In 1949, along with her family, she moved to Utica. She was a graduate of Proctor High School and the Utica School of Commerce. Sandy was married to Francis "Butch" Giacovelli and later married Graydon Kalies. Over the last 46 years, she was cherished by her devoted companion, Terry Smith. For 56 years, from 1956-2012, she was the credit manager in the accounts receivable and accounts payable department at Mele Manufacturing. A humble woman, she was generous to her family, friends, neighbors and associates. She enjoyed preparing and delivering meals; whether it was to a gathering at work, or a neighbor in need. No one was ever turned away and her door was always open. She is survived by five children, Thomas J. Giacovelli Kalies of Utica; Gregory Kalies Giacovelli and his partner, Michael Barnum of Utica; Cynthia and Thomas Lazzaro of Verona; Jeffrey Kalies and his partner, Hannah Gage of New Hartford and Debra Romanelli of Chapin, SC. Four sisters and a brother, Madonna Bleckrie, Diane Hnat, Richard and Christine Belgrano, Sharron Mathey, and Suzanne and Robert Becker. Eleven grandchildren, Jenelle and John Hammill, Breanna Kalies, Vicki Giacovelli, Gregory Giacovelli, Katie Giacovelli, Maggie Giacovelli, Christopher Lazzaro, Andrew and Marion Lazzaro, Kacie Kalies, Garrett Kalies and Rebecca Romanelli; six great-grandchildren, Alexander Hammill, Diamonte and Mercello Giacovelli and Leia, Evangaline and Anthony Lazzaro; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. A Mass and Divine Liturgy for the Faithful Departed will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 am at St. Louis Gonzaga Church, Utica, with Chorbishop John D. Faris and Deacon Paul Salamy officiating. Private interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. A calling hour will be held Wednesday from 10-11, prior to the service at church.
