Obituary

Saul Finer, DDS, of New Hartford, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Monday, August 27, 2018, in New Hartford, NY, at 89. Saul was born March 3, 1929, in Utica, NY, to Allen and Bessie Finer, the youngest of three sons. After Allen died at an early age, Bessie married Sam Meyers, who had four children. The families blended easily and remain close. Saul's easygoing manner and quick smile earned him the name Giggles, or Gig for short. Dr. Finer graduated from Utica Free Academy and Utica College of Syracuse University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics. He also attended the University of Maryland, studying Physics on fellowship. During summers in Maryland, he worked as a physicist for the US Navy. Dr. Finer was accepted to medical and dental schools, opting to attend Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery, from which he graduated in 1956. He interned at the Veterans Administration Hospital in New York City and soon after married Brooklyn native Judith Bellis, the love of his life. They spent two years in Germany while Saul served as a captain in the US Army. At the urging of his stepbrother, Dr. Saul (Sonny) Meyers, he set up a dental practice in North Utica. Saul and Judy had three daughters, Adele, Cheryl and Michelle. His interests ranged from jogging, skiing, golf, tennis, pottery and sculpture to jewelry making, bridge, boating, hiking and travel, and he spent many blissful hours fishing during summer months with his cousins, daughters, nieces, nephews and friends, and later, his grandchildren. In retirement, Dr. Finer facilitated popular art appreciation courses at the Mohawk Valley Institute for Learning in Retirement. Dr. Finer was a founding member of the Utica Jewish Community Center, an active member of Temple Beth El, former president and member of the Fifth District Dental Society of the State of New York, and former member of the Knights of Pythias and the Kiwanis Club. The family is grateful to the compassionate staff at Hospice and the many family members and friends who shared memories and laughter during Dr. Finer's last months. Dr. Finer leaves his wife of 61 years, Judith B. Finer, of New Hartford, NY; daughters, Adele Finer (Elliott Rabin) of Riverdale, NY, Cheryl Chinnici (Andrew) of Ontario, NY and Michelle Kilcher (Michael) of Old Forge, NY and Winter Haven, FL; grandchildren, Batia and Abraham Rabin; stepsisters, Beatrice Friedberg and Ruthe Meyers; and many nieces, nephews and close family friends. In addition to his parents, Dr. Finer was predeceased by his older siblings, Dr. Seymour Finer, Norman Finer, Dr. Saul Meyers and Millie Sussman. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to Temple Beth El, Utica College or a favorite charity. The funeral is on Thursday, August 30th at 1:30 p.m. at Temple Beth El, 2710 Genesee Street, Utica, NY. Shiva will be observed at the Finer home, 150 Genesee Street, Apartment E27, New Hartford, NY on Thursday, 7-9 p.m. and Friday, 1-3 p.m. Arrangements are with the Bentz Funeral Service, Inc., New Hartford, NY.
