Wesley H. Smith, 78, of Clinton, passed away Thursday, September 18, 2014, at his home, with loved ones by his side. He was born November 7, 1935, in Utica, the son of the late Dorothy Smith. He was a graduate of UFA and the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business. Wesley owned Smith Packing Company in Utica. Under his leadership he grew the business from a local meat manufacturer and distributor into a global enterprise. He valued the hundreds of employees, customers, and partners that helped Smith Packing Company flourish over decades, and counted many colleagues as close friends. He enjoyed summers and winters in Old Forge, loved listening to classical music and opera and had an adventurous spirit that took him around the globe. But, he most appreciated time spent sharing great meals and laughter with family and friends. As an active and philanthropic member of the community, Wesley supported many associations. Donating time and resources, he held leadership positions in the Masons, the Jewish Community Center, the Resource Center for Independent Living (RCIL), and Adirondack Bank. The Old Forge Arts Center (View), the Women's Fund, and many other local causes benefited from his patronage. He is survived by three children, Eric Smith and his wife Rachel of New Hartford, Robin Hutchinson and her husband Peter of Denver, CO and Michele Fee Smith and her husband Michael Fee of Boston, MA; and seven grandchildren, Lindsey and Jordan Smith, Jonah, Lilly and Quinn Hutchinson and Natasha and Alexi Fee. He is also survived by his loving companion and partner, Diane Wolfe of Clinton; her children, Nancy Huckaby and her husband Eric of Clinton, Deborah Wolfe and her husband Philip Raible and Andrea Wolfe and her husband Kirk Lipsey, all of Brooklyn, NY; and her grandchildren, Max and Beny Huckaby, Emma Raible and Edie and Jack Lipsey. Wesley, a treasured partner, father, grandfather and friend will be deeply missed. The funeral will be Sunday at 12 noon at Temple Beth El, 2710 Genesee Street, Utica with Rabbi Ronald Kopelman and Canter Kalman Socolof officiating. A calling hour will be held from 10:45 am-11:45 am, prior to the service at Temple. Interment will be in Temple Beth Cemetery, Whitesboro. Shiva will be observed from 3:30-6:30 pm on Sunday thru Tuesday at their home, 3581 Harding Road, Clinton. Arrangements are under the guidance of the Bentz Funeral Service, Inc., Utica/New Hartford.
