Charles Abelove Obituary

Charles Louis Abelove, 83 - loving husband, father, grandfather and brother - passed away on April 20, 2024. Born on May 27, 1940, to Milton and Reba Abelove and the oldest of three children, Louis was a proud lifelong resident of Utica, NY.

Louis graduated from Utica Free Academy in 1958 and Union College in 1962. After graduating from the New York University School of Law in 1965, Louis joined his father’s law firm and continued as a practicing attorney and businessman for 56 years.

Louis loved his family, practicing law, and antique cars, with a particular passion for Packards. He twice drove across the country and back – once after law school in a convertible MGA and once with his family in a 1948 Packard. In his professional and personal life, he believed fiercely in helping others but preferred to do it quietly, out of the spotlight.

Louis was predeceased by both his mother and father. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ellen Portnoy Abelove of Utica, NY; his sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Norman Siegel, of Utica, NY; his brother and sister-in-law, David and Sharon Abelove of Clearwater, FL; his sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Herb Pollack of NYC; his daughter, Amy Abelove and her husband Ric Bowen of Watertown, MA; and son, Joel Abelove and his partner, Xiomara Lopez; four grandchildren, Max and Eli Bowen, MaryElizabeth Abelove  and Aaron Abelove and his fiancée, Melanie Novenche; and many nieces and nephews.
